Alt-J's "Left Hand Free" Helped Introduce Tom Holland's Spider-Man to the MCU

Alt-J frontman Joe Newman is reflecting on the lasting impact of the band's song "Left Hand Free," which played during Tom Holland's first appearance as Peter Parker in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.

Speaking with ABC Audio, Newman recalled watching the film at its London premiere and realizing the significance of the moment.

"It wasn't until I was at the premiere where I was like, 'Ah s***, this is f****** cool,'" Newman says. "I mean, this is huge."

He says he quickly recognized that the scene introduced Holland as the new Spider-Man.

"I processed it, I was like, this is the first time they're introducing Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man, he looks about 12, and there's something really exciting about this."

Newman also reflected on the success of "Left Hand Free."

"'Left Hand Free' has been really good to us," Newman says. "It's the quickest song that we wrote, it took 25 minutes to write that song. It's the song that sounds like us the least, and it's been our most successful song."

He adds that its appearance in Captain America: Civil War remains the song's greatest achievement.

"The top of that pile of achievements for that song is definitely the Captain America film, for sure."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland's fourth solo film as Spider-Man, is now in theaters.

Meanwhile, Newman has released a new solo album, The Canyon, under the name JJerome87.
